In April 1984 Ordnance Survey published ‘Dartmoor’ - the first Outdoor Leisure sheet with a photographic cover. This design preceded, but was very similar to, that of the first Landranger photographic cover published towards the end of the same year (see also the Landranger ‘3a’ covers themed category). Like the Landranger design, the first photographic cover for the Outdoor Leisure series was soon changed to emphasise the ‘Ordnance Survey’ branding. The full extent of the use of these first photographic covers on the Outdoor Leisure series is not yet fully documented, however it seems that only a very few sheets were ever published in this cover. It also seems that some minor artwork design changes were carried out on the cover during the course of its use, as demonstrated by the three different styles of cover within this collection. |
The aim of this collection theme is to acquire a copy of each Outdoor Leisure sheet published in the early photographic cover design, c.1984. |

N.B. The column ‘Cvr’ on this page refers to the style of cover used on the sheet:
‘O2a’ refers to the first design with a white OS logo on the cover (?Mar/Apr 1984);
‘O2b’ refers to the slightly revised design with a black OS logo (?May - ?Oct 1984);
‘O2c’ refers to the last of these early designs - ‘ORDNANCE SURVEY’ is added to the OS logo (?Oct 1984 - early 1985?).
